With product characteristics you can assign different costs to the variants but you cannot assign different weights. For example, a software product with the option to download or to get it on CD. Obviously, a CD has weight and needs to be shipped, whereas a download does not. Right now, we need to have two products defined, one for a CD and the other for a download. It would be nice to condense that down to one product with a delivery option for the customer to choose from.
