select subtiel refer to item

i have a hiearchy that exist for many products . I don't know if i have to use the characteristic orcategory or fields filter way .
what i kno is tha on the browser client side i want a select box ( call it select1) and after select an item inside this selct1 widget a new select box appear ( call it seelct2) with the subitem relative to item seelct in the first select ( seelct1) .
Does hikashop can do that in the gui way ( no need of php code / non coding )

I don't know for reduce the number of product return by search /filter if best is to use category filters or custom field filter !
