Thumbnail images not showing on category page

I want the thumbnail image to show on the category listing page. I thought I have all the correct settings (on the configuration, menu item and category and product pages), but maybe I am missing something.
Can someone list all the necessary settings to display the thumbnail on the category listing page as well as an image on the detail product page?
