What if you set the layout to "tabular" and instead use the "protostar" template ? If it works fine, then the problem is with your template override of the tabular layout. The view "show tabular" is stripping the description at the top of the page ; unfortunately, PHP is not really good with UTF-8 and it looks like it cut at the wrong place. Please put a "read more" tag in your product description in order to set yourself the right place to "cut".
