Can serials be renewed?

I have a quick question... can an expired serial be renewed or should the customer be directed to purchase a new license?

Potentially yes but it would require some custom development in order to integrate such kind of feature.
Because the expiration date is stored in the serial "extra data", you can modify that value in order to "renew" the serial.
