Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 are already not supported anymore by Joomla. Joomla 1.5's support will end in a few months. If you want to do a new website, you should start with Joomla 2.5. That will avoid you any painful migration of Joomla and the extensions you will have on it (even though it's not much of a problem for HikaShop as we support all the versions). For example Lof SlideShow (by landofcoder) for hikashop officially doesn't list joomla 2.5. so i am not sure will it work with hikashop+joomla 2.5? will it? The best is to ask them, not us. As far as HikaShop is concerned, Joomla 1.5 or 2.5, it works the same.
