It needs one variant for each combination of values. So if you have 4 characteristics with 10 values each, that's 10*10*10*10 variants. That's WAY too much for a normal website to handle all that data. You should use characteristics only for when you need to handle prices/stock/product information on a per variant basis. You apparently don't need that for all your characteristics so you should use options: [ www2.hikashop.com/en/support/documentati...ct-form.html#options](http://www2.hikashop.com/en/support/documentation/integrated-documentation/19-hikashop-product-form.html#options) or custom fields of the table "item": [ www2.hikashop.com/en/support/documentati...p-field-listing.html](http://www2.hikashop.com/en/support/documentation/41-hikashop-field-listing.html) for your characteristics. That will avoid the problem.
