When is it happening ? When clicking on a menu listing the categories, it come from a module ? Generally the problem is due to a module configuration, you have to set a menu in the module options. Please activate the debug mode of the joomla configuration and try again and that will display an error message with more information on what is going on. Can you try to turn off the SEF options in the joomla configuration and see if that solves the problem ?
