Not some intro text or article etc. So in the meantime, I've opted to turn off ajax and set add to cart to redirect to the checkout process, as the popup messages don't work. Also because a full page reload only to show an updated cart seems old fashioned, as least going to checkout makes it not seem like the page is refreshing for nothing, it's still got a continue shopping button. I'm going to use winmerge to compare the original overrides that came with the template to see what I edited to try and source how I managed this.
