I didnt see this explained in the documentation or on another forum post so apologies if this is previously answered. The "list" and "table" mode display the whole characteristic area differently on the product page, regardless of the number of characteristics added to the product. So if you have "list" selected, it display the variants as a list. Having one characteristic with list and one with dropdown on a product would be problematic as the system wouldn't know what to do with the display.
