If you get that error, it means that the line of the CSV mentions the product_type as "empty" or "main" but that the corresponding entry in the database (based on the product_code) is a variant. and it's not possible to change the type of the entry like that. Which means that your CSV is erroneous. Correct your CSV and it will work.
