In Configuration -- Sales Tax: If "Detailed Tax Display" is set to NO, the confirmation email shows the Subtotal and then, immediately, the Total. The Sales tax line is not listed separately, so the numbers don't appear to add up. (see no-tax-item.pdf) When "Detailed Tax Display" is set to YES, the confirmation email shows the line for tax, but it doesn't show a Subtotal line. There is either a "total without tax" line when you turn off the "detailed tax display", or one line per tax. You apparently changed the "total without tax" to "subtotal" via a translation override or a modification of the code, thus the confusion you have. So basically, what you're suggesting is to add a sub total line. We'll add that to the todo list.
