We did it with in our demo website. The thing that you have to know is that, you can have both in the same cart. So at the moment when you add the event in your cart, you can't add regular products in your cart except if you empty it (and remove the event). Otherwise, it works good. The easiest way seems to be to edit the desired mail and add an if condition to display some content if it's a product or another content if it's an event.
