It's used on the user registration form on the frontend only for the custom user fields (that's where they are useful). So it's normal that it works for product custom fields and not user custom fields as that's how it's made. Also it seems that the display limited to of the product custom field does not work for the variants. I've added a few patches for all that. Download the install package on our website and install it on yours and that will add the patches and make all that work. As I said, the modifications are included in the package on our website. Your can download it via the menu My account>My subscriptions and install it on your website. That will replace the files and you'll get the modifications automatically.
