There, you first need to create a new tax category and a new tax rate via the "manage tax rates" and "manage tax categories" buttons. Then, create a new tax rule and set it to the Illinois zone with the tax rate and tax category you created and save. Then, in your products, set the tax category to the one you created. And finally, in the config, set the main tax zone to Illinois and voilà. Based on the address of the user, the taxes will be displayed or not during the checkout. If you don't want to display the taxes on your products listings and pages, you can change your main tax zone to something else so that it will only be displayed if the address of the user is in Illinois. So, now the taxes should show ONLY when a person from Illinois purchases an item. Now, should I set the Tax Category of the individual products to Illinois for this to work? By default all the products are linked to the default tax category. So you could use that one in your tax rules. That will be faster than changing it for all the products. That is not good, as at least here in America, and how other carts work..taxes are APPLIED and SHOWN only when the user has been "identified" that they are in the "taxable zone" In other words, "Illinois Residents please add x.xx%" if they are "not logged in" yet, and ONLY show "taxable amount" after logged in as the TAX is UNIQUE only to resident of Illinois. When the user is not logged in, it uses that zone for the taxes. Just configure another zone there so that the prices don't get the tax until they enter their address. I like a fool, did have Akeeba backups...but I never downloaded them...so I am starting from scratch again...as I also have lost over 100 products, all categories and brands. I am also repeating this, so that it is here for others in the USA...step by step, as during a cart set up...and before products are even entered... Taxes should be declared. 1) I have Illinois set again to Main Tax Zone 2) I have added Illinois to Tax Category 3) I have 6.75 entered for Illinois "tax rate" 4) I am now back at System > Tax rule "NEW" a) I selected Illinois and then also now selecting it as the Zone by clicking on the EDIT icon.. I then type in the pop up and putting a "check mark" in Illinois and it is "Published" and clicking OK. b) Save & Close and it is now showing proper. Now, to what you have said...and sorry for repeating this, but this is "unclear" re: You must have configured Illinois as your main tax zone in the configuration. When the user is not logged in, it uses that zone for the taxes. I do have this set as "Illinois" re: Just configure another zone there so that the prices don't get the tax until they enter their address. This is where I am confused? Configure another? There already is the "Default Tax Zone" .. You don't mention whether or not you selected Ilinois in the "tax category" and "tax rate" options of the tax rule that you created. If that's not the case, the tax won't be applied to the products. Also, in your products you need to select the "Ilinois" tax category that you created. By default, when a user didn't yet enter his address, the taxes on the prices are calculated based on the "main tax zone". If you select Ilinois, the taxes throughout the store will be calculated as if the current user was in Ilinois. So if you decide to show the prices with taxes on the products listings and/or the product page, the prices will include the taxes. If however you decide not to, then, regardless of the the way you configured the taxes, you won't see the difference on listings and the product page.
