You can do a link to the checkout by creating a menu of the type hikashop checkout via the menu manager of joomla. You can display the module cart by activating it to a position of your template via the module manager. If you want to display the popup notice when a product is added to the cart, you should set accordingly the option "After a product is added to the cart" of the Display tab of the configuration. It did not occur to me you can also make a checkout link in the Joomla menu, going to do that as well. And that is controlled by the option "After a product is added to the cart" of the Display tab of the configuration.
