Instead, you should create custom fields of the table "item" and of the type "multiple list" or "checkbox" via the menu Display->Custom fields. However, that's only available for the Business edition. Also, price cannot change based on the custom fields selection unless you create a custom price calculation plugin so it might not be suitable for what you want to do if you're not a programmer and in that case I don't have any other solution.
