HikaShop has a setting called "URL where you will be redirected when the cart is empty" in the Cart section of the configuration page (System > Configuration > Cart). You can set it to any URL on your site. If left empty, HikaShop redirects to the default shop page. You could point it to a custom Joomla article that displays a "Continue shopping" message with a link and a HikaShop content module showing product recommendations (bestsellers, latest products, etc.).
