Variant images not showing

Main product page has 3 images assigned. On the two variants of this product, i tried to assign images (one image for each variant). The result is only one image (from first variant) which does not change when you switch variants.

I checked the show_block_img view file and even reverted back to the original to confirm that one of my overrides for mobile display wasn't affecting this.

For now, i removed the variant images so i could have them all display from the main product page. However, any thoughts on why the variant images aren't showing when the variant is changed? Everything else corresponding to the variant changes properly.

Figured out my issue. I had an override on the show.php view file:

$this->setLayout('show_block_img');
echo $this->loadTemplate();

The above lines were commented out, hence no variants.

Is there any easy way to make the mobile version of images (whether variants or main) mobile responsive via swipe? Or is it limited to the shadowbox for now?

Shadowbox is responsive but doesn't handle swipe.
However, this plugin provides additional image popup modes, some of them with swipe support:
