categorie listing filtered by tag showing variants

Hi,
A customer came with an interesting question.
She would like to be able to show product like you would with a regular categorie listing with multiple categories and their products.
But products that should be visible are the ones that have a specific tag. This can also be on a variant only, so not on the main product.
Would that even be possible?
Or can you think of another way to show product like a normal listing and not in the filter view (becasue no images etc). ?

Hi,

You can create a custom product field in order to select the "tags" in each product.
Then, you can create a filter on that field to be able to filter the products listing based on these tags.
When you use that filter, you'll see the URL of the page change in the address bar of the browser. So you could use that URL to create a menu item as an alias of that URL.
This when, when the customer would click on that menu item, he would directly end up on the filtered products listing.

Now, you mentioned variants. Variants cannot be listed on a products listing.

Hi,
Nice to see you took another direction to do this than I did. I ended up creating extra categories and a hidden menu item for it.
Both work and you can choose whatever works for you.

I also found that you can create direct links to variants by adding the id in front of the alias. Maybe I can come with something clever using that in combination with the tags.

And if not, the that is what we have :-)

Hi,

While you can't list variants along with products on listings, note that you can create a filter on a characteristic. So for example, if you have a "color" characteristic, you can create a filter on that characteristic. On the listing, if the customer selects a color in that filter, the listing will only display the products which have at least one variant for that color.

Ok, if I understand correctly when filtering on characteristic "blue" you get products listed that have the characteristic blue. So you don't see only the variants.

That is not really working in this case because they only need/want to show the variants that match the characteristic.
For showing the products that she wants I can accomplish this with an extra category.

But... maybe I understood you wrong that is very well possible.

If I understood you right, then maybe what I want could be done with a custom job?

A custom job would be difficult.
The system isn't really made to be able to display variants on listings.
It would create a lot of issues than needs to be taken care of.
However, if you want to display the variants directly on the products listings, then why use variants at all ?
You could create a category for each product with variants, and then, in each category a product for each variant of the corresponding product. Maybe that's what you mean by "For showing the products that she wants I can accomplish this with an extra category." ?

Hi, just a last reaction to round things up...

I know that having separate products is solving this challenge and if it's important enough for the client they can choose this option.
But, I've learned a few new trick for possibly a later project :-)
