So I cleared all Joomla & Browser caches and tried again. Now - when checking out after selecting "ayment method" the cart goes back to the default home page with message 'the cart is empt"', Although the Shopping Cart displays items ready for checkout I ahve ensured all Plugins for Payment and Shipping are enabled and inthe workflow.
