Invalid Coupon Messages?

I'd just like to ask how we can display a message on the Coupon section of the Checkout page whenever an invalid coupon code is entered (e.g. when the coupon code has already been used or when the promo has already expired).

There are already such messages displayed.
If you don't see them, please provide a screenshot of the settings of a coupon which doesn't display an error message and provide a link to your shop and instructions to reproduce the issue.

Here's the screenshot of the Coupon setting:


It's supposed to be applicable for non-discounted items only.
During checkout, the coupon is properly applied (meaning, it's not being applied to already discounted items); however,there's no message displayed in the Coupon section of the checkout that properly displays this message.

Ah yes, the error messages are only there for when the coupon is invalid.
In such case, the coupon is valid, and even if you only have discounted products in the cart, the coupon is still valid, its value is just 0.

The cases you mentioned in your first message

(e.g. when the coupon code has already been used or when the promo has already expired)

should however display an error message.
