How to sort products into correct order?

I have been trying to order the products on my web page...however, when I do this, the item order numbers keep duplicating? How can I sort these products easily?

What do you mean by "the item order numbers keep duplicating" ?
On the products listing of your back end, select a category and you will see the products of that category with a "ordering" column where you can enter the order you want.
