Product characteristics and variant records

Hi,

I offer a (custom) product that has 3 different characteristics(size,color option 1, and color option 2). The 1st characteristic has 13 choices. The 2nd and 3rd characteristics both have 20 choices. This generates approximately 5,200 variant records. This large number of records slows the server and sometimes creates a 500 error when the product is accessed. Is there a way to maintain the product characteristics without creating a record for every possible combination. In my situation the only thing that is changing is the color/size of the item. So, I do not require any changes (price, weight, ect...) across these variants.

I've tried to create a new product and split the number of the 1st characteristic (child and adult sizes) to receive 2500 variants, but the number of records was still to large. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Then maybe you actually don't want to use characteristics but options ( www.hikashop.com/en/support/documentatio...ct-form.html#options ) or custom fields of the table "item" ( www.hikashop.com/en/support/documentatio...p-field-listing.html ). Each one has a pros and cons. One of the pros of options and custom fields is that they are light weight as they don't create variants for the product (which is a cons if you need to change the price/image, etc per variant).

The "product" custom field is stored in the product table and is seen as a fixed value in the product page.
The "item" custom field is stored in the user cart. The customer will have to select a value in the product page.

To resume
product : the drop down is displayed in the backend. Value displayed in the front-end product page.
item : the drop down is displayed in the front-end. Value displayed in the backend order page.

What do I have to do so that the fixed values (drop down options) are accessible to the customer in the product page? Also what should be done to have the customers selected value appear in the order on the back-end for processing?

Well, as explain in my previous post, product custom field are not the right solution.
So you have to delete the product custom field and create an item custom field.
