Variants dissappeared

I do not know what is going on, but i published a new set of test products, almost all of them with variants, and now variants dropdown is missing inside page product.

Even for the products you already had ?
That should not have any impact.

If you access the variants via the "manage variants" button, do you see them ? Are they published ?
Do you see a variant for each possible characteristic combination ?
Do you see the characteristics in your product ?

The answer is "yes" to all.

The default value for the characteristic was L. But the only two variants were S and M. So the system couldn't properly process the variant data and wasn't displaying any characteristics. I just changed the default value to M and it's working.

I got a bit lost. Do you mean that if a product does not have at least the default variant, the entire variant system does not work??? it sounds no sense, as long as it forces me to have and stock for one arbitray variant.

And also, i have never seen nothing related to a default characteristic value in the backend...

By the other way, products with only one variant, a more than possible situation if you delete variants of your inventory, do not display what would be logical: a dropdown with only one option.

And still are product that does not display their variants despite having what you anme "default variant", for example: shoptest.avaray.com/es/component/hikasho...a/category_pathway-0 (which has "M" and "L").

It's on the main product edit page. In the characteristics listing, you have a dropdown for each characteristic under the column "default".
If those default values do not correspond to a variant, then the system doesn't display the dropdown.

Indeed the system could be nicer and still display the dropdown even when there is some inconsistency in the data. We will look at trying to modify the system to avoid that.
