Adding Text to a product that is added to the cart

we are selling items that can be imprinted on to our product. Is there a way to make custom field Characteristic that the user can type in what they want imprinted THEN add it to the cart?

I think that you'll find your answer there :

You have two possibilities:
1. You can create a custom field of the table "order" via the menu Display->Custom fields. The field will appear during the checkout and attached to the order.
2. You can create a custom field of the table "item" via the menu Display->Custom fields. The field will appear on the product page and attached to the product in the cart (and later on to the product in the order).
In both cases, that is only possible with the Business edition. Also, in both cases, the information will be available in the emails and in the order details on the back end.

Can we limit the Text in the field based on the Characteristics they choose!?

EXAMPLE:

- if they select 'straight' the field needs to be required to 26 characters
- if they select 'round' the field needs to be required to 40 characters

There is no option to do that. You can set a limit on the field, but not based on the characteristic selected.
In that case, you would have to create two products when different custom fields for each.
