No shipping costs in a specific postalcode area

Is it possible to set a postal code area were no shipping cost will be added?
If so, were to set the parameters?

In the shipping method options, you can find in the restriction part "Minimum post code" and "Maximum post code" so you will probably have to create three shipping methods, one with cost for postal code from, for example, 1 to 444, one free method from 445 to 555 and the last one with costs from 556 to 999.

Is it possible to set this automatically based on the postal code?
f.e: A address within the postal code area 6000 - 7000 is free from shipping cost. Every other postal code will be the regular shipping cost?

Yes.
Duplicate your shipping methods and have one group of them with their "max post code" restriction option set to 5999 and the other group with their "min post code" restriction option set to 7001. Then create a new manual shipping method with a min post code of 6000 and a max post code of 7000 and a price of 0 and the customers will get free shipping automatically if their post code is between 6000 and 7000 and otherwise they'll see the normal shipping methods.
