I am trying to trim down the number of active plugins on my site, but I'm concerned about removing plugins that might mess up functionality. Is there a way to determine which plugins are critical versus not?
It depends on the functionalities that you're using...
If you're using the geolocation, the geolocation plugin is necessary. If you're using the search plugins, then you need them, etc.
