hide subcategories in category listing in front

I'm not sure I understand your question. It's normal that you see the categories on a categories listing. If you remove the them, then it's just a products listing and in that case, why use a categories listing and not a products listing ?
Could you provide a screenshot of the situation and point at what you want to remove where ?
