Custom SQL Lookup Field?

I would like to add a custom field for customers that would be a look-up from an existing SQL table - where the data (in the SQL table) is managed by an external source.

Ideally this field would allow me to create the SQL to fetch the list to be used for selection (as well as group the display of the list).

We're presently using the Community Builder CB Query Field, but would really like to pull this field into the checkout process within HS.

Is there any way to create this (i.e. is there a plugin available somewhere, etc.)?

It is possible to create new kind of custom field in HikaShop using plugins.
The "custom field datepicker" is a new kind of custom field and is all managed by a plugin. The data is still stored in a column of the selected table but it is possible to store is in another place.

But there is no plugin available for that specific purpose (I don't know how it would be possible to create a very generic plugin for that).
