User group during registration

Is there a way to set the user group on registration by entering a given code during the process?
A selection of products should only be available to a user group. In this case it's different schools that should only see the collection of their own school.
Now I want to hand out a code (text) to the school, so that when entering this during the registration process they are automatically put into the right user group.
I know there is a tool to select the user group, but I don't want everyone to see who my customers are.

It depends what code you want the user enter.

HikaSerial have a consumption plugin called "group consumer" ; it allows to affect a user group to a logged user when he used a specific serial. But once the serial will be used, he couldn't be used again.

Otherwise, you can see to use a user custom field which will be display during the registration and then, using a little custom plugin, you can change the user group after the user creation (depending the content of the custom field).
So, it would be more something like a pass-code to unlock the user group.

I have to get into this again.
So with HikaSerial it is possible to
1) generate a set of serials that adds a user to a specific group when he enters the serial
2) hand out serials of package 1 to future user group 1 members
3) hand out serials of package 2 to futer user group 2 members ... and so on
4) the user registers and once he has done this, he can enter the serial to be added to a specific user group
5) the user will stay in this user group when he logs out and in again

Is this how HikaSerial can work?

1/ Yes, using the "group consumer" plugin you can change the user group when a user consume a special serial.
2/ Using a "group consumer" instance configured for the "pack 1"
3/ Using another "group consumer" instance configured for the "pack 2"
4/ Yes, the user must have an account to be able to consume a serial (when using "group consumer" plugin).
5/ Sure, the group assignation is not versatile in Joomla.
