Is it possible apply characteristics to categories

Is it possible to apply characteristic groups to categories which then appear with each product within that category?
When a new product is created within a specific category, only those relevant /assigned characteristics can be selected for the product.

One solution could be to create a mass action (System>Mass action) with the trigger "when a product is created" and a filter on the category. Then, in the action part, select add characteristics and set it up as you want. Thus, every time you create a new product in this category, the characteristics will be added to the this product
