Handle Free Events

just wondering if I can check how you guys usually set hikashop up to process free events in a shop which also processes paid for items.
For instance as the "confirmed" status only gets set after paypal send a message back what happens when the event is free and doesnt require payment?

When the total of the cart is 0 no payment methods will be required to finish the checkout so the order will be created. However, the status won't be changed automatically to confirmed.
You would have to build a small hikashop plugin to change the status to confirmed when the order created is free. You could base yourself on the history plugin code for that.

From what Ive seen the notice of the order doesnt go out. Am I correct in this assumption?

No, the order creation notification and order admin notification are sent when orders are created.
So the customer and you should receive an email when the order is created unless you unpublished the emails via the menu System->Emails in the Business edition.
