I am trying to edit the template/css so that the area surrounding the category image is the same colour as the background and not white. Can anyone assist in pointing me towards the correct file(s) to amend please?

You don't have to edit any file.

Just go in the menu Display->Content menu and edit your menu with the id 14. There, you can change the color of the background.
