Sales tax in Texas was created by leslieann
I have followed along with this thread but I am confused after going back and forth trying different settings.
www.hikashop.com/en/forum/4-how-to/16350...nly-in-illinois.html
Here is what I am trying to do.
My business is located in the State of Texas, in the city of San Antonio.
If a customer's address is inside of the city of San Antonio, I need to charge 8.125%
If a customer's address is inside the state of Texas, but NOT in San Antonio, I need to charge 6.250%
If a customer lives outside of Texas, I don't charge anything.

OK I've read a few ideas, Nicolas has a good idea, I am just too close to the problem and need to step back for a different perspective.
First: Reconfigure the hierarchy to have the state become the country, and the city become the state:
Step 1: Goto System -> Zones Select "Countries" from the right side dropdown box - unpublish ALL countries, even the United States
Step 2: while you are still in System -> Zones, Select "States" from the right side dropdown box
Step 3: Repeat 50 times, Select each state (that is in the US of course) and edit it
Step 4: Click on the dropdown box labeled "Type" and change it from State to Country

Next Reconfigure custom fields to trick customer into putting in the information you need, where you need it.
Hikashop Admin -> Display -> Custom Fields
Step 1: Disable field named Address_City
Step 2: Change Label on address_State from State to City
Step 3: Change Label on Address_country from Country to State

Next set up two zones
for me I am setting a zone up for San Antonio and a zone that ISNT San Antonio
I am setting them both to the type of "state"
Once those two zones have been created, I am going to go back and find the "country" zone for Texas and edit it.
I am going to add my two "state" zones as subzones of the country zone "Texas"
I will make two tax rules, one for Non San Antonio (with 6.250%) and one for San Antonio (8.125%)
....anything else I need to do?

Hi,
You might reset the type of the customer field "address_state" in order to have another "zone" custom field.
At this moment, when the custom field "address_country" (with label "state") would change, it would update the content of the "address_state" drop down list (with label "city").
Regards,

Hi Jerome!
I got it working but its not ideal. I set the field type back to zone from custom and it works.
If I select San Antonio / Texas, it charges 8.125% correctly,
If I set non-san antonio, Texas, it charges 6.25 correctly,
If I set it to some other state (really its the country code), it hides the city field (really the state code) and doesn't charge tax
While this works, I am sure it will be confusing to any customers when they are trying to put in their address.
ETA: I am using paypal for payments, Since this is a billing address, the customer could put an out of state address on this form, and give paypal a in-state address for shipping and avoid the sales tax.

Hi,
You should create a new tax zone for the rest of the "world".
With paypal, the plugin send billing and shipping information, so you should force the shipping address so the customer would not be able to change it.

But what if you do have international customers, doesn't changing the label fields eliminate them?
