Custom characteristic value defined by shopper

I was wondering if it's possible to add a custom field/characteristic which a user in the shop can define himself. It's the same idea as the engraving which apple offers for their products. Let's say a user wants something engraved on a product, or needs to add some information to the order of that specific product. As far as I know this is not possible with the current features of hikashop, but perhaps someone can give me a pointer as to how to code this in php. I'm not completely familiar with the structure of hikashop (i just started using it), so help would be amazing!

I think that you'll find your answer there :

You have two possibilities:
1. You can create a custom field of the table "order" via the menu Display->Custom fields. The field will appear during the checkout and attached to the order.
2. You can create a custom field of the table "item" via the menu Display->Custom fields. The field will appear on the product page and attached to the product in the cart (and later on to the product in the order).
In both cases, that is only possible with the Business edition. Also, in both cases, the information will be available in the emails and in the order details on the back end.

Sorry for the late reply, but I can't seem to get the item to work.

The order table works fine, the field appears uppon checkout, but I want the field to appear on the product itself. So in the "show.php" view.

You have to create the custom field in the table "item" and not order.
This is available in the Business edition of HikaShop.

I did create it in Item, but it still doesn't show up. I have 1.6 business

Could you give us a screenshot of one custom field configuration ?

Are you restricting the display to a category ? Or something else ?

I fixed it! it seemed that if I added a category it didn't work. Now there is no category added to the restriction and it works! Yay!
