Questions on custom fields

On the screen for custom fields there are fields for columns, rows, size and format but there is nothing in the help files for what these do.

Can the variations be explained please?

Size: the size of the input element (works for text and dropdown inputs and zone)
Format: that is used only for dates so that you can define the format of the date (following this formatting table: php.net/manual/en/function.date.php )
Rows: only for the text areas. It's the number of rows
Columns: only for the text areas. It's the number of columns
Zone: only for the zone type. It enables you to select what kind of zone dropdown you want to display.
