Admin menu items appear at top of Joomla admin

I have just installed Joomla 3.03 and have imported the data from a site running on 2.5.9. via phpMyadmin. The problem is that the top of the screen is populated with text as per the attached screenshot. This doesn't happen with a fresh install!

Upgrading the 2.5.9 site via the administrator area using the Joomla update facility gives the same results.
