Hi Nicolas,

I’m reviewing the configuration of the HikaShop Google / Meta Products feed Plugin and I’m unsure what the best setup is for the description field in the Google Merchant Center feed.

On our website we don’t use a “Read more” separator in product descriptions, so we don’t really have a true “short description”.

Our current settings are:
• Short Description: enabled (Yes)
• Description source: Meta description
• Message if no description: “No description”

My questions:
1. Given that we don’t use “Read more”, does it make sense to keep Short Description enabled, or is it effectively irrelevant?
2. If we select Meta description, does the plugin take the meta description from the parent product or from each variant (when variants are exported using item_group_id)?
3. Do you recommend leaving Message if no description empty (so nothing is exported) instead of sending a fixed string like “No description”?
4. For Merchant/Shopping performance, what is usually better: using the Meta description or the full product description, considering we don’t have “Read more”?

If you can suggest the recommended configuration for our case (no read more + variants), I’ll apply it and regenerate the feed.
Thanks!

Hi,

Here are the answers to your questions:

1. Short Description setting: When "Short Description" is enabled (set to Yes), the plugin uses the text before the "Read more" separator in the product description. Since you don't use "Read more", this setting will simply use the full product description as-is (there's nothing to split). So it's effectively irrelevant in your case. You can leave it enabled without any issue, or turn it off - the result will be the same since there is no "Read more" separator to split on.

2. Meta description with variants: When variants are exported with `item_group_id`, the plugin merges the variant data with the parent product data. If a variant doesn't have its own meta description, it inherits the parent product's meta description. If a variant has its own meta description set, that one will be used instead. So it works as expected: variant-specific when available, parent as fallback.

3. Message if no description: Google Merchant Center requires a description for each product. If you leave the message empty and a product has no description and no meta description, the product will be exported with a generic "No description" text (hardcoded fallback at the end). It is better to leave the field empty and make sure all your products have either a description or a meta description. A fixed string like "No description" could cause issues with Google as it's not a real product description.

4. Meta description vs full description: For Google Merchant/Shopping, the meta description is generally better because it is concise and written specifically for search engines. The full product description can contain HTML formatting, long text, and information not relevant for a shopping feed. Google recommends descriptions between 150 and 5000 characters. Since you don't use "Read more", the full description might be very long. The meta description is usually the best choice for the feed.

Recommended configuration for your case:
- Short Description: does not matter (No or Yes, same result without "Read more")
- Description source: Meta description
- Message if no description: leave empty, and make sure all products have a meta description
