Categories / Subcategories Display

Iwould like to display the categories/subcategories in different displays.
1.- I would like the main category to be displayed in block and image--description
2.- Then when you click in a category i waould like the subcategories to be displayed as list.
3.- inside this subcategories the products are displayed

How can i do that?

The solution will probably be to :
1. Create a category listing content menu with the type of layout option set to "List"

2. Create a category listing content module with the type of layout option set to "Div" and the menu option set to the category listing content menu that you just created.

Umm i´m a little bit confused:
1.- I created a category listing content menu called printcartridges
2.- I want this main category to display as block so i set it to block.
3.- When they see the categories and click on one of them f.e. Canon i want all the printers to be displayed in list.

So i miss one step to do it.
