Problem With Display of Color Variants

Hello,

I have a setting of product with two color variants.
I configured everything exactly according to the 272-hikashop-display-by-color.html manual.
I have colors in the Joomla media.
I have product Characteristics defined accordingly and my product has 2 variants with colors.

When the product is displayed, it shows the main image at the top and below, it shows both variants.
The color switching operation does indeed switch the product variant (as can be seen by the title), but it does not switch the images.

My understanding is that when I switch color, it should be linked with the image(s) of the variant which should be switched over in the main product image window. AND, there should only be one image window for the product. Not one for every variant.
Do I understand right?

What am I doing wrong?...
