pages will not diplay in multiple columns [SOLVED]

I am having trouble with the display for both the Content module and the menu link to the shop.
Both are displaying in a single column despite being set, in their relevant control panels, to display in 4 columns.
This happened before I upgraded to 3.1.1_2017_7_27. I was previously using 3.1.1_2017_7_27.
Am I missing something basic? Have been through the documentation and it says it is a simple case of clicking the relevant column/row set up and although they are set correctly at the back, they are not displaying.

I have also just checked the 'Modules main default options' and it is set to a default of 4 columns, but still no joy.
