Filter by category

Is there away to use filter module and sort the items by category and other stuff?

For example I want a filter on the homepage, which lists the categories, and some other variables, locations, value...etc.

I created a filter to sort the products by category and another variable "custom field" the problem is when I choose the category it displays all the products, from all categories, and once I am on the results page, I can select a category and then filter by the other "custom field" and is working fine, however I want the filter to work from the first time like once a user landed on a homepage, to be able to select the category and any other options and filter directly, is this possible?

Please help ASAP.
