Shipping method radio buttons not auto selecting

I am having trouble getting the shipping method to auto select as configured in the back end. I have tried many configurations with no success. I have been developing this cart for a long time and I think this may have happened after the last Hikashop update but I am not positive. I am running:

Joomla 2.5.14
HikaShop 2.2.1

My cart workflow is:
step 1: cart, login, address, shipping
step 2: cart, payment, term & conditions
step 3: cart, address, shipping, payment

I have only one published shipping method (UPS)

I apologize for the long post but my experiences with the different settings are summarized below. I think the problem here is that the shipping method is not selecting as it should.

With
Auto Select default ship & payment method set as if only one method is available
Auto submit ship & payment methods set as yes

Result: Shipping cost shows in the cart summary however the shipping method radio button is not selected. Hitting the next button reloads the page. Hitting the shipping radio button proceeds to the next step. -Why should i have to select the shipping method if it is already showing in the summery? -auto select should take care of that but is not.

With

Shipping cost shows in cart summary, Shipping method radio button is not selected. hitting next reloads page, hitting the shipping option radio button selects the method, then hitting next proceeds to next step. -Again the shipping cost is already shown so why should i have to select shipping again?
