I would say that it's probably because you have the "shipping" view in your checkout workflow but that you didn't configure shipping methods (or you did, but not correctly) and thus the system doesn't allow you to continue and display an error message.
However, there is no error message displayed on that page probably because of your template which doesn't display them:

The Essential edition won't change that.
Thank you for the response, Nicolas. I'll check those items. We do get the message that the cart has been emptied, that's in red. Is that the error messaging system or a different system?
