Product variant images

I was wondering, on products with variants (eg in color) is it possible to automatically change the product image to the one of the specific variant (if images can be added to variants)? If so, how.

Eg:

product "T-Shirt with center logo" has the variants "white (default)", "green", "blue". When the user would select the "blue" variant, the image being shown would change from the default white one to the "blue" one so they could see the exact color.

That looks like an extremely complicated procedure. Don't need the whole coloricon thing. The text value of green will do just fine, at least at first. If the main product image will change that'll be enough. So can I skip a part of its there an easier way?
