Show 'in stock' and 'out of stock'

Instead of showing the amount of stock there is avilable and then having nothing showing at all when there is no stock, is there a way to do the following:

Show a message 'In stock' when it is available
Show message 'Out of stock' when it is currently out of stock

But I would also like it to automatically display a variation of the item that is in stock when selecting the product so the browser sees the in stock items first rather than seeing an out of stock item and leaving the page before checking the other variants.

I did look through the forum, but couldn't find post needing this solution.

You have to make a translation override on the key "X_ITEMS_IN_STOCK", regarding the "out of stock" it's already displayed by default.

Actually we cannot select the variants with stock by default in the dropdown, it will require custom code.
What can be done is selecting another way to display the variants in the configuration, I think that display in table can be the alternative. By this way the customers will see all the variants and their stock on one page.
