8k categories problem

As title suggests I have 8000+ categories in my webshop. On my local computer site's front and back end is running relatively ok, but when it is accessed trough local network or from remote computer it becomes really slow. To be more precise all pages that list categories are really slow. Is there a way to cache these so they dont load each and every time.
Or any other way to speed it up?
