Do Images Update After Replacement in Uploads?

I could not find the answer to this in the documentation.

I thought it was possible to simply upload an image of the same name to the uploads directory to replace it. Then the product image would be updated. However this does not seem to be true. Ive emptied the browser cache, and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Is it possible to simply upload a replacement image of the same name? Or do you need to manually delete the old one, then add a new image with a new file name?

Thankfully, images are not being overwritten only because they happen to have the same file name. That's a good thing.

Well-meant advice: don't mess with the images in the upload folder "manually" unless you know exactly what you're doing.

The proper way is:

  1. In the backend, open the product to edit it.
  2. In the right pane, under Images, delete the image you want to replace.
  3. Upload the new image.
  4. Save.

Thanks for confirming this. I can see the upside to doing a file replace and then some sort of scan to re-import the ones that have changed. There are merits to both methods. But the way it is does protect against potentially horrific mistakes.
