Hi,
my customer has just asked for something that seems strange I cannot find as it would appear to be a normal option.

In categories in the back end you have up and down arrows to change the order

In products I do not have the same option even though in the parameters the default is 'ordering'. How can I directly change the ordering of products in the backend ?

thanks

Tony

Hmm, other than filtering products displayed by categories, manufacturers, published status etc, you can sort them by almost any column available. Maybe it's just me, but I can't think of what those arrows would do better there, not to mention that it'd be a hell of a lot of work to only change the backend display order with arrows, at least if you have many products displayed.

With categories it's a completely different game as they are typically displayed in a particular order in the frontend, which the backend ordering is mandatory for.

not sure if this helps, but have your customer thinking about it again: why would he want the arrows there?

Hello Tony,
You'll be able to change the ordering of your products by using the "Ordering field" option of your product listing content menus/modules.

Hi,
Mohammed, i cant see how this option can change the order of say a single product in the list, as an example my customer has products that are different colors and he wants to order them on the page in a specific order.

Hi,

So in your case you have to manage the order of the characteristics in Product > Characteristics.

Hi,
there are no characteristics, there are 5 different products and the images just happen to show different colors and the customer want to sort them by whatever he feels like.

Tony,

Have you solved this, yet?

Had an idea:
Add a custom field to the "product" table, name it "Color". Make it a single dropdown with all available colors as values. Display it in "Backend listing" only (unless your customer wants to see it in the frontend as well at the opportunity). Obviously, the product listing in the backend will then contain a column "Color", and your customer should be able to sort/group his products by it.

It'll cost him only two more clicks on product creation or edition.

Hi,

The ordering of products can also be changed with the "order" column of the products listing. If you don't see it, it means that the sub element filter dropdown at the top right of your products listing is set to "all sub elements". Change it and you'll see the column.
